The Annapurna South Base Camp Trek is a beautifully secluded route that offers an alternative to the popular Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek. Nestled in Nepal’s Annapurna Conservation Area, this trek is ideal for adventurers seeking solitude, authenticity, and spectacular mountain scenery without the crowds. Instead of following the well-trodden path into the Annapurna Sanctuary, this trail ventures through peaceful forests, traditional Gurung and Magar villages, and vibrant rhododendron forests, leading to the base of Annapurna South (7,219 meters)—one of the most stunning peaks in the Annapurna range.
This trek’s charm lies in its raw and untouched nature. The route ascends gradually through diverse landscapes—lush forests, alpine meadows, and high ridges—offering panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. The experience is intimate and immersive, providing trekkers a chance to connect deeply with the natural environment and the rich local culture.
Situated in the southern region of the Annapurna massif, the trek falls entirely within the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA), Nepal’s largest protected region. Unlike the more frequented Annapurna Base Camp trail, this route is quieter and more pristine, taking trekkers through dense rhododendron forests, peaceful ridgelines, and pastoral landscapes dotted with grazing yaks and stone farmhouses.
Highlights include the Khopra Ridge, known for its sweeping vistas of snow-capped peaks including Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). One of the trek’s standout moments is the sunrise from Muldai Viewpoint, which offers one of Nepal’s most breathtaking Himalayan dawns.
The best seasons for this trek are:
Spring (March to May): The forests and hills come alive with vibrant rhododendron blooms, and the weather is generally clear and pleasant.
Autumn (September to November): Offers stable weather with crisp air and clear mountain views, perfect for photography and hiking.
Temperatures typically range from 15–20°C during the day at lower elevations but drop below freezing at night, especially near Khopra Ridge and Annapurna South Base Camp. Weather conditions can change rapidly, so layered clothing and preparedness for wind and cold are essential.
The trek passes through villages primarily inhabited by the Magar and Gurung communities, two of Nepal’s indigenous ethnic groups. Their lifestyle centers on subsistence farming, animal husbandry, and maintaining traditional practices. This area is less commercialized than the popular trekking corridors, allowing for genuine cultural experiences.
Along the trail, you’ll encounter colorful prayer flags, small stone chortens (Buddhist shrines), and local temples that reflect the blend of Buddhist and Hindu influences. Villages such as Ghandruk and Swanta offer authentic hospitality—you might be invited into homes for tea or a meal, providing a warm and personal connection with the locals.
