Pisang Peak (6,091 meters / 19,983 feet), also known as Jong Ri, is one of Nepal’s most popular trekking peaks, nestled in the heart of the Annapurna region. It offers an ideal mix of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural immersion, making it perfect for both amateur and seasoned climbers. The expedition combines a scenic trek on the famed Annapurna Circuit with a moderate alpine ascent, attracting climbers from all over the world.
Location and Access
Pisang Peak lies above the Upper Pisang village in the Manang District of north-central Nepal. It is part of the Annapurna Conservation Area and is surrounded by breathtaking Himalayan giants like Annapurna II, IV, III, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and the majestic Manaslu range.
The adventure begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, the gateway to the Annapurna region. From there, trekkers follow the classic Annapurna trail via Chame and Upper Pisang.
Trekking and Climbing Overview
Climbing Pisang Peak is a blend of trekking through culturally rich villages and climbing in high-altitude glacial terrain. The trail ascends through rhododendron forests, narrow gorges, and windswept alpine meadows before reaching Pisang Base Camp at around 4,380 meters. From Base Camp, climbers ascend to High Camp (5,200 meters), which is located on a rocky slope just below the snowline.
The final summit push involves navigating a glacier and a steep snow slope of up to 45–50 degrees. The route may require fixed ropes depending on conditions. Although technically less demanding than higher Himalayan peaks, Pisang requires basic mountaineering knowledge and strong physical fitness.
Sherpa Guides and Support
The climb is best undertaken with an experienced Sherpa guide and support crew. Sherpas provide essential services, including route management, camp setup, safety briefings, and cultural interpretation. They are highly skilled in altitude acclimatization and rescue protocols, offering peace of mind in a remote alpine setting.
A typical team includes:
Climbing Sherpa (guide)
Assistant guide (optional)
Porters (carry equipment and supplies)
Cook (for larger expeditions)
