Trip Overview

The Khayer Lake Trek (also called Khopra Danda Trek) is a spectacular off-the-beaten-path journey in the Annapurna region that combines breathtaking Himalayan vistas, traditional Gurung and Magar culture, and spiritual serenity. Unlike the busier trails to Annapurna Base Camp or Ghorepani, the Khayer Lake Trek ventures into less-traveled highlands, offering solitude, pristine alpine beauty, and a rewarding climb to the sacred Khayer Lake (4,660m), believed to be a powerful pilgrimage site by both Hindus and Buddhists.

This trek is ideal for those seeking a blend of moderate challenge, cultural immersion, and stunning natural variety—from subtropical forests and terraced farmland to alpine pastures and dramatic ridge-line trails.

Geography and Landscape

The trek lies in the southern flank of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in central Nepal. Starting from the lush lowlands near Pokhara, it gradually ascends through rhododendron and oak forests into open meadows and rugged highland ridges. At its high point, Khayer Lake (also known as Khayar Tal or Khopra Lake) rests at the base of Annapurna South (7,219m), offering panoramic views of Annapurna I, Fang, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Nilgiri, and Tukuche Peak.

People and Culture

This region is predominantly inhabited by the Gurung and Magar communities, known for their bravery, hospitality, and rich traditions. Along the way, trekkers stay in charming villages like Tadapani, Chistibang, and Swanta, where age-old customs, traditional dress, and Buddhist-influenced festivals are still prevalent. In addition to farm-based livelihoods, many locals are former Gurkha soldiers or tourism workers.

Throughout the trail, you’ll find Buddhist prayer flags, chortens, and small shrines, as well as occasional Hindu temples—especially around the sacred Khayer Lake, where pilgrims come to bathe during Janai Purnima in August.

Package Highlights:

  • Sacred Khayer Lake (4,660m) beneath Annapurna South
  • Spectacular sunrise views from Khopra Ridge (3,660m)
  • Panoramic vistas of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Machhapuchhre
  • Rich Gurung and Magar culture with homestay-style hospitality
  • Lesser-traveled paths with tranquil settings and fewer crowds
  • Traditional villages, yak pastures, and pristine rhododendron forests
  • Wildlife sightings including Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and pheasants
  • Optional side trips to Ghorepani-Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp routes

Trip Itinerary

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport. You’ll be met by your guide or representative and transferred to your hotel in Thamel, the bustling tourist district. Depending on arrival time, explore local streets, gear shops, or ancient temples. In the evening, attend a pre-trek briefing covering itinerary, safety, and equipment.

After breakfast, travel to Pokhara, the gateway to the Annapurna region. The 6–7 hour drive offers scenic views of the Trishuli and Marshyangdi Rivers, or take a 25-minute flight with incredible mountain panoramas. In Pokhara, enjoy views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Phewa Lake. Overnight at a lakeside hotel.

Drive (1.5 hours) to Nayapul, the starting point of the trek. Begin trekking through subtropical forests, small hamlets, and terraced rice fields. Reach Ghandruk, a beautiful Gurung village with stone houses, dramatic mountain views, and a cultural museum. This village offers a great introduction to Gurung heritage and hospitality.

Today’s trail ascends through dense oak and rhododendron forests, especially vibrant during the spring bloom (March–April). The trail is peaceful with birdlife and occasional langurs. Arrive at Tadapani, a ridge village with stunning views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre.

Leave the main trail and enter a quieter, less-trodden route to Dobato. The trail climbs gradually through enchanting forests and occasional yak pasture clearings. The landscape becomes more alpine. Optional sunset hike to Muldai View Point (3,637m) offers one of the best 360° panoramas of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges—often in complete solitude.

A short day, giving your body time to adjust to higher altitudes. Walk through dwarf bamboo, pine, and highland vegetation, often sharing the trail with grazing yaks. Overnight at Chistibang, a seasonal herder’s area with basic but cozy teahouses and great sunset views.

This is a highlight day. The trail climbs sharply to the Khopra Ridge, with jaw-dropping views of Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna South, Nilgiri, and Tukuche Peak. Arrive at Khopra Community Lodge, perched above the clouds. Spend the afternoon relaxing and enjoying the views from this dramatic ridge-top.

Start before dawn for the strenuous but sacred hike to Khayer Lake, nestled at the foot of Annapurna South. It is a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. The remote trail passes through high alpine meadows and rocky terrain. The effort is rewarded with spiritual tranquility and unmatched scenery. Return to Khopra Danda by late afternoon.

Descend steeply through alpine forest and open fields to Swanta, a Magar village known for warm hospitality and local cheese production. You’ll pass by rhododendron groves and small farms. Visit a local cheese factory and learn about life in a remote mountain village.

Trek continues downhill through lush forests and terraced farmlands, offering glimpses of rural Himalayan life. Pass watermills and grazing cattle as you approach Ulleri, known for its long stone staircase (more famous for the uphill version!). Overnight in a cozy teahouse.

The last day of trekking is mostly downhill through forested paths and riverside trails. Arrive at Nayapul by late morning and drive to Pokhara. Check into your hotel and enjoy a hot shower, lakeside stroll, or celebratory dinner.

Choose between a 6–7 hour road journey or a 25-minute domestic flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. The evening is free for shopping, visiting Durbar Square, or enjoying a farewell dinner.

Transfer to the international airport for your flight home or continue on to other adventures in Nepal.
