The Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s most spectacular and remote journeys, leading adventurers into the heart of the eastern Himalayas. This lesser-known trail unfolds beneath the towering presence of Mount Makalu (8,485 m), the world’s fifth-highest peak. Winding through the untouched Makalu Barun National Park, this trek rewards intrepid travelers with a raw, wild experience—where snow-draped ridgelines, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic glacier basins meet rich biodiversity and quiet Sherpa hamlets.
Unlike Everest or Annapurna, the Makalu region remains blissfully free from crowds, making it ideal for those seeking genuine solitude, off-the-grid exploration, and cultural immersion. It’s a challenging yet deeply rewarding expedition through alpine wilderness, across high passes, and into hidden valleys that few trekkers ever witness.
Geographically, the Makalu Base Camp Trek covers stunningly diverse terrain—from subtropical forests and river gorges at just 400 meters to glacial landscapes and windswept ridges above 5,000 meters. The trail begins in the lush Arun Valley and gradually climbs through rhododendron forests, bamboo groves, and yak pastures to the base of Mount Makalu.
The Makalu region is sparsely populated, inhabited by ethnic Rai, Sherpa, and Limbu communities. These villagers lead traditional agricultural and pastoral lives, largely untouched by commercial trekking. As you move higher, the Tibetan Buddhist influence becomes more evident—mani walls, prayer flags, and serene chortens dot the trail. Some households in the mid-hills still practice animistic traditions alongside Buddhism, offering a fascinating blend of beliefs.
Staying in small villages like Seduwa and Tashigaon gives you insight into remote highland lifestyles—modest, resilient, and deeply spiritual. While language may be a barrier, the locals' warm smiles and generous hospitality leave a lasting impression.
Book This Trip
Your journey begins with a scenic 35–45 minute flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, located in the low hills of eastern Nepal. Upon arrival, meet your trekking crew and drive by jeep along winding, forested roads to Chichila, a small Gurung village perched on a ridge. You’ll get your first views of the surrounding hills and distant snow-capped peaks. Overnight at a local teahouse or camp.
The trek officially begins as you set off on a trail that passes through small settlements, terraced farmland, and mixed forests. The path gently undulates before a final ridge descent to Num, a picturesque village located on a narrow spur. The village offers dramatic views on either side, including glimpses of the Arun River far below. Overnight in a teahouse.
Today’s trek is physically demanding. You descend steeply through dense forest to reach the Arun River, which roars through the gorge far below. After crossing a suspension bridge, a steep climb begins through bamboo and rhododendron forests. Eventually, you reach Seduwa, a small farming village at the boundary of Makalu Barun National Park. Register at the park check-post. Overnight at a teahouse.
Continue trekking through terraced fields, cardamom plantations, and scattered houses. The trail steadily gains altitude but remains relatively moderate. You’ll reach Tashigaon, the last permanent settlement on the trail. The village, surrounded by forested hills, is primarily inhabited by Sherpa people. From here, the terrain becomes more remote. Overnight in a teahouse or camp.
Prepare for a challenging uphill climb. The trail ascends steeply through dense rhododendron and oak forests, then past grazing areas and rocky paths. As you gain elevation, the views expand and the air thins. Khongma Danda is a scenic ridge with sweeping mountain vistas. This is the last stop before entering high alpine terrain. Overnight in a tented camp or basic lodge.
To prevent altitude sickness, spend the day acclimatizing. Optional hikes to nearby ridges offer incredible views of Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and the Arun Valley. Relax, hydrate, and prepare for the following day’s high pass crossings. Overnight at the same camp or lodge.
A long and rewarding day. You’ll cross multiple passes, including Keke La (4,170m) and the iconic Shipton La (4,200m), named after explorer Eric Shipton. The landscape is rocky and windswept, with towering cliffs and alpine lakes. From the high point, descend through rhododendron forest to Dobate, a peaceful meadow surrounded by thick woodland. Overnight at a camp or teahouse.
Descend through moss-covered forests to the banks of the Barun River, then follow a more gradual trail that meanders through a valley of hanging glaciers and waterfalls. Arrive at Yangri Kharka, a broad, grassy meadow nestled beneath sheer cliffs. The area is a seasonal yak grazing ground. Overnight in tents or a basic teahouse.
The trail climbs gradually, with stunning views of snow-covered peaks emerging at every turn. You’ll pass through yak pastures, cross wooden bridges, and see occasional stone shelters used by herders. Langmale Kharka is a serene campsite just below the high alpine zone, surrounded by glacial moraine and panoramic vistas. Overnight in camp.
Today you reach your destination! The trail becomes more barren and rugged as you ascend alongside the Barun Glacier. With each step, the south face of Makalu becomes more dominant and awe-inspiring. Arriving at Makalu Base Camp, you’ll be surrounded by an amphitheater of Himalayan giants including Makalu, Baruntse, and Peak 6 & 7. Set up camp on the rocky terrain.
Spend a full day exploring the base camp area. Optional hikes to higher viewpoints offer breathtaking panoramas of Everest, Lhotse, and Chamlang. Walk along the glacier ridges or simply absorb the silence and solitude of this sacred place. This is also a good day for reflection and photography. Overnight in camp.
Retrace your steps through Langmale, Yangri Kharka, Dobate, and over the passes back to Khongma Danda, then descend through Tashigaon and Seduwa to Num. Although you’ve seen the trail before, the views are different in reverse and offer new perspectives. Enjoy the hospitality of familiar villages along the way.
From Num, continue trekking to Chichila, the village where the trek began. From here, a jeep will take you back to Tumlingtar, passing through lush hills, terraced farmland, and forest roads. Overnight in a local guesthouse in Tumlingtar.
Board your flight from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. Spend your afternoon resting, shopping, or enjoying a well-earned celebration dinner in the city.
